RIP to an absolute legend. A mystical figure of sorts. An irreplaceable human who we’ll never see the likes of again. And one of the only humans alive with the cache to illicit this kind of reaction through social media.

TMZ — The artist known as Prince has died … TMZ has learned. He was 57. Prince’s body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early Thursday morning. The singer — full name Prince Rogers Nelson — had a medical emergency on April 15th that forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Illinois. But he appeared at a concert the next day to assure his fans he was okay. His people told TMZ he was battling the flu.
Real talk though… this was rattling. One of the craziest, most unexpected celebrity deaths imaginable. And one of the only celebrities alive with the cache to illicit this kind of reaction through social media.
Since we’re all sharing our favorite Prince stories/songs/moments/etc. I’ll throw mine out there:
When I heard the news, my first thought was the story of the SNL40 afterparty. One of the most amazing stories you’ll ever hear. Starts around the 7:15 mark. But the single best thing in the story isn’t the emergence through the crowd, or the purple smoke, or the above-the-crowd presence he somehow maintained among the biggest celebrities in the world. It’s the line he has when he gets on stage…
“Dearly inebriated”
I mean… come on… that is an ALL TIME line. When you really thing about it, that’s a line that can never be topped. You can never replicate that person, with that type of presence, in that type of moment, amongst that type of crowd, altering his most famous line in such a simple, perfect way.
I don’t know, maybe I’m the only one who feels that way. But it’s the absolute number one thing I’ll think about when I hear Prince’s name.
Well, that… and Dave Chappelle
