That look! Dear lord… LOOK AT THAT LOOK!
If that isn’t the look of a man who knows he’s about to hang 30-15-4 a night on the league then I don’t know what is. You want to talk about cocksure and confident? Dude looks like Larry Bird’s illegitimate Latvian son up there. There’s the “it factor” that most professional athletes have, and then there’s the “superstar it factor” that the most elite athletes have, and then there’s the “once-in-a-generation it factor” that only a handful of guys get to posses. Some display it with a competitive arrogance like Jordan and Kobe. Some display it with joy and showmanship like Magic and Lebron. And some just have an air of quiet confidence that can never truly be described. Russell had it. Bird had it. Duncan had it. And now Kristaps has it. And all you need to do is watch this press conference to understand that.
“It’s going to be fun year”
Heavens to betsy. Someone get me a glass of water over here.
And the reference back to his second year as a pro in Spain? My god. I almost fainted. 21 years old and he’s already on his second stint as a second year pro. If I’m doing the math correctly I’m pretty sure that means he’s going to make twice the superstar leap that your typical once-in-a-lifetime talent 7’3″ with a guard’s talent and a small forward’s athleticism franchise cornerstone basketball unicorn would make. Just simple math, guys. No need to complicate things.
We’re now exactly four weeks from Opening Night. 28 Days from the start of year two for Kristaps Porzingis. I don’t want to say this press conference raises my expectations for him, because it doesn’t. You can’t raise a ceiling that doesn’t exist, right? But I’d be lying if I didn’t feel a little more joy in my heart having watched him answer these questions.
