The Hill — Lena Dunham is the latest celebrity to say she’ll hightail it out of the country if Donald Trump is elected president. “I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will,” Dunham told Andy Cohen at the Matrix Awards on Monday. “I know a lovely place in Vancouver and I can get my work done from there.” The star and creator of HBO’s “Girls” has been a prominent supporter of Hillary Clinton. She has campaigned with the Democratic front-runner throughout the 2016 race.
Wow, tough call here for all those crossover Lena Dunham diehard fan/Donald Trump voters. You know, all those empowered female neo-nazis. The pro-choice evangelists driving pickup trucks with COEXIST bumper stickers. I hate to be the one to stereotype here, but you know exactly who I’m talking about, right? That transgender barista at your local coffee house who insists on Hank Williams Jr. Pandora. That guy you know who can’t watch The View without packing a lip. All those racist feminists who can’t sit through church on Sunday without vaping.
I just can’t imagine the mental battle this news will cause for those people. I’m sure they have their reasons to vote for Trump, but I don’t know if they can pull the trigger in light of this threat. I mean, come on. What Donald Trump supporter wants to see a strong female voice like Lena Dunham leave the country. It’s already confusing enough for these people that another noted feminist like her isn’t a fan of The Donald. How are they now supposed to deal with the possibility of losing her to… *gulp*… Canada if they cast their vote for Trump. That is a difficult fucking decision, and I don’t envy the people in the center of the Trump-Dunham Venn Diagram* who have to make it.
Yes, this will cause some difficult conversations in those households. But those are conversations that need to happen. Because at the end of the day, you can’t just run away from your problems when things don’t go your way. Isn’t that right Lena?
*Do you think there’s even a Venn Diagram for those two? Seriously, are there two more polar opposites than “people who are influenced by Lena Dunham’s political stances” and “people who plan to vote for Donald Trump”? Is there one person alive in both camps? All you need is one person to qualify this as a Venn Diagram, and I don’t think you’ll find that person. You’re more likely to find a real life Clayton Bigsby than a crossover Dunham-Trump supporter. Which makes it even funnier that Lena Dunham thought this threat was anything other than self-satisfied preaching to the choir. Good for you Lena. Really brave stuff.
