CBS — In an unprompted remark that left many puzzled at Bulls media day to open the 2015-’16 season, point guard Derrick Rose turned his attention to the summer of 2017, when he’s set to become a free agent.
The sequence began when Rose was asked how much a sexual assault civil lawsuit filed against him in California by an ex-girlfriend weighed on him and affected his preparation for the new season.
“I’ve been moved on,” Rose said. “This whole summer I had tunnel vision. My mindset was just making sure that I was working out every day, and spending as much time as possible with my son (P.J.). And focusing on those two things. Making sure my family is financially stable, as far as seeing all the money that they’re passing out in this league. Just telling the truth. Just knowing that my day will be coming up soon, and it’s not for me. It’s for P.J. and his future, so that’s what I’m thinking about right now.’
“I’m preparing for it.’’
Rose, who turns 27 on Sunday, has two years and around $41 million left on a max deal with Chicago. Asked a follow-up question later, Rose emphasized that he wants his future to be in Chicago but indicated his mind is on getting his fair share of cash in a changing financial landscape in which a massive influx of TV money is leading to rising player salaries.
How? How does this stuff keep happening with him? Is anyone telling him not to do this? Does he let anyone advise him besides his fuckboy brother Reggie? Has he not learned a single thing from his dozen other incidents? Does he just not get it at all?
I mean it’s incredible to watch. I don’t think Derrick has handled a single situation correctly with the media. No, obviously that doesn’t make him a bad guy. And of course I’m not talking about his talent or his work ethic or his intentions. I’m just talking about common fucking sense. I’m talking about simple, common sense PR decisions that he’s messed up EVERY SINGLE TIME he’s encountered a situation. From the SAT thing at Memphis, to having his brother talk to the media, to mishandling the entire “cleared to play” return in 2013, to the whole “walking at his son’s graduation” debacle, to this. Every single time he fucks up. It’s unbelievable.
And now he’s talking about the next round of free agency that is still two years away. Talking about it right in the face of an organization and fanbase that has done nothing but support him as he’s payed in a grand total of 100 out of 246 possible regular season games over the first three years of his $95 million contact. I mean how… HOW can you talk about that? How oblivious to the media can you be? How has not a single person in your life told you not to talk about free agency when you’ve done anything but fulfill your current (nearly) nine-figure deal? It’s truly truly amazing how un-savvy he is. I don’t think I’ve seen someone handle the media worse than him. And as ridiculous as it sounds, I wouldn’t be shocked to hear a Chicago fan or two say they’ve at least entertained the thought of a Bulls team free from the Rose Circus. Even I’m starting to hate him for this shit.
Get a PR team Derrick, and fucking listen to them.
P.S. If it was any other athlete I would immediately call bullshit. It would be a classic publicity move to distract from the sexual assault case Rose is currently involved in. But this is Derrick Rose. There is no way that he or his dumb ass brother Reggie would think of that. This is just Reggie being too dumb to realize how stupid of an answer he just gave.
P.P.S. Did they base Vernon Littlefield from Ballers off of Derrick Rose? They 100% did right? Superstar talents who mean well but have zero smarts. Both brought their whole family along for the ride out of guilt and not knowing any better. Both have a total fuckboy brother/childhood friend named Reggie who somehow thinks he’s entitled to Vernon/Derrick’s money because he “was there from the beginning.” Both stupidly allow their respective Reggie’s to run their business affairs, and continue to do so despite their Reggie only making things worse. And both are overall seemingly likable and good people who don’t have the common sense or heart to cut everyone off like they need to do. The similarities are uncanny. The Vernon Littlefield Torn ACL Episode is coming in Ballers Season 2. Write that down.
