TVLine — President Barack Obama is set to go Running Wild With Bear Grylls, NBC announced on Monday. President Obama will trek through the Alaskan wilderness with series host/survival expert Bear Grylls, to observe the effects of climate change on the area. Along the way, POTUS will receive a crash course in survival techniques from Grylls. President Obama’s visit will be taped and aired on NBC later this year.
One of my favorite hot takes out there is when people freak out over Obama (or whoever the president is) taking time to film things like Between Two Ferns (which was funny), Marc Maron’s podcast (which was surprisingly really insightful), or SNL (which is always underwhelming). The people who freak out that the President took an hour or two in an attempt to reach out to a younger generation. The ones who say, “Isn’t there more important stuff to do?” as if the President could have solved the financial crisis in those two hours. Those people are the biggest losers in the world. I mean give me a fucking break. He’s the President. He’s a figurehead. And filming a show in Alaska for 8 hours on a Wednesday in November is going to do a lot more for people at least talking about climate change (and how big of a deal it is) than writing any legislature that will get shut down by Congress faster than you can say “hey look the sea levels rose again this year.”
So yes, I am excited to watch Obama on this show. Sure, Bear Grylls’s show is probably super fake. And yeah I haven’t watched in a while. But I always liked Man vs. Wild. So I’ll watch it and I’ll enjoy it. And when it comes time to do something about climate change I’ll probably be too lazy to get off my couch because I’m a huge hypocrite and I’m pretty much all talk.
